STEP 1. Oak tree seeds are called acorns and are readily available from your nearest park or forest, where oak tree's grow. When you have located an oak tree, you have to wait till the acorns are ripe and ready to fall off the tree, the acorns appear in a cluster of 2-6 during September-October. Acorns fall in October but can be collected from the tree if they are ripe. They can be picked when the acorn has turned brown and comes away from the cup easily. Storage: It is best to sow straight away but if you must store acorns, keep them in a hessian sack in a cool dry place and do not allow them to over heat. Shake the bag from time to time to prevent the acorns heating up. NOW WHAT? STEP 2. Collect as many Acorns as you want to grow. The sound or usable acorns must be separated from the bad or unusable acorns. Any nuts that are mouldy or have holes should be discarded. Now put all the acorns in a bucket of water, all the floating nuts are bad (unusable) while those that sink in the water are good (usable) for planting. These nuts should be spread on a flat surface and air dried for a day or so before planting. Because acorns do not store well, it is important to have a prepared seedbed at hand for timely planting. This seedbed should be in an open area away from larger trees, and should afford some protection from winds, should be as near a water supply as practicable, and should lend itself to protection from rodents and other animal invaders. Sowing: If you plant straight away, plant to a depth of 10cm in a seed bed and in the Spring rake off the top 5cm of soil to leave a 5cm covering. The extra 5cm protects the acorns from being eaten over the winter. Leave plenty of space between the acorns in the seed beds as the young saplings produce large leaves. SAPLING SESSILE OAK TREE STEP 3. O.K. Now you have your sapling oak tree, you need to plant it somewhere that will allow for it's size and spread. A good place is at the end of your garden or around the boundary of your property. The best time to transplant your seedling is in March/April just when the growing season is starting. Dig a hole about 1' foot deep and 2' feet in diameter. Put some manure or compost in the bottom of the hole and cover with well broken up earth. Press the earth down firmly, taking care not to damage your tree and finally water liberally. WATCH YOUR SAPLING BECOME A MAJESTIC OAK. THE IRISH NATIONAL TREE THE SESSILE OAK (Quercus petraea) (A Height of 65-100 feet and a Diameter to 6.6 feet) THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO GROWING YOUR OWN IRISH OAK TREE GOOD LUCK! | |
